The term
blue blood, used for royalty stems from Spanish. Later it's been translated into many languages, as well as Norwegian.
The origin of the expression is quite simple: the kings and queens had very pale skin, they were not out in the fields working, and if they were outside at all, they protected themselves against the sun with an umbrella. Through their pale skin they could see the blue veins, however on workers no, due to their tanned skin.
And that's how the expression was born, since the veins were blue and what's inside them is blood, well then the blood had to be blue right?
Good. So on to the next one. I heard this expression,
Principe azul, and I didn't understand. What, or who is the blue prince? It's Prince Charming of course! Or the Knight in shining armor if you will. It has the same origin; the blue blood of royalty.
I went online to see what Google would come up with if I searched for Principe azul.
-The one who saves Cinderella, but of course!
Fancy dress for Carnaval?
-Of course... a frog!
What about this one? Haha!
Seems the colour blue is not only important in the blood, eh? I like this one though:
So...now you know what a blue prince is! You never know, might come in handy one day...
Interessant! Det gir jo mening med blått blod.
SvarSlettDen blå prinsedrakta der er jeg nok mer skeptisk til.
Sikker på at du ikke skal satse på en slik neste gang du evt. skal kle deg ut?
SlettI love reading about royal families and monarchies whether present day or in the past and I can't believe I have never questioned the term, 'blue blood'! Now I know!! :-)
SvarSlettIt's funny how expressions just sneak into our language without us questioning them. That's a part of learning a new language I think, I question so much more the real meaning of words in Spanish, where as in my own language it's just "how it is" and I don't give it any second thought..
SlettVery interesting! I never knew that's what blue blood meant. Thanks for the information :) Cool blog.
SvarSlettThank you :)
