I have come to really, I mean really appreciate traditional lunch the Spanish way. It's very common to eat out for lunch here, there's a lot of food at a good price.
In Norway, this is a typical lunch...

When I look at it now after having gotten used to more Spanish ways of eating I am not at all wondering why I was always so hungry at work! Just a few hours after eating I was wondering how I'd make it till after work to finally get some dinner.
Let me show you what typical lunch looks like in Spain! This one from one of my favorite restaurants, La Taberna Gallega, located just by the beach.
When seated something like this is put on your table:
This is the most typical Catalan tapas: Pa tomaca/pa tomaquet. Bread with tomato. Yummy delicious. Toasted bread rubbed with fresh tomatoes and extra virgen olive oil.
Then a little something (appetizer) is put on the table while you look at the menu:
Your first plate could look something like this:
Then we move on to main course, which is always a kind of Paella for me. Absolutely LOVE paella, it tastes of sun and summer, mmmmm! And of course wine is on every table. In Norway we drink milk or juice with our lunch, here it's a bottle of wine shared between two people! (Haha I love Spain!)
But we're not done yet! (At this point I am about to burst, but there's more coming...) Postre! Time for dessert... Cake, pudding, fruit of the season, ice cream....
I love fruit and looove piña, so that's also an easy choice for me
Then it's time for coffe... And with the coffee comes a little plate with chupitos (a digestive liquer, I think we need it!) and some delicious nut cake.
¡Que aproveches! I'll just roll home...
What do you eat for lunch?

Slettwell, that's what you eat in a restaurant but spanish homes don't do it that way everyday :P
SvarSlettwe don't drink two or three dishes, only one (big), but one.
not everybody drinks wine. i guess people use to do it on sunday lunches. and nobody drinks chupitos after lunch in their homes.
i know you do this with a good intention and i like your blog but please, try not to give the image of spaniards eating always a lot and living like we are always on holidays and doing nothing.
Hi there ANONYMOUS. This post is about a typical lunch in a RESTAURANT. I have not insinuated that this is common to eat at home, as I have no knowledge of that. But I know that (at least in Barcelona) it's common to eat lunch at restaurants, and this is what you typically get.
SlettI am not sure what you mean by saying that I am trying to give the image of (I quote you) "spaniards eating always a lot and living like we are always on holidays and doing nothing."
Hey anonymous, my Spanish fiance's family does two plates every day, but that doesn't mean they eat a lot! In fact, they eat quite a good amount -- enough to power them through until 9 p.m. or later! I don't think this means they eat a lot if they have two plates. Also, they do drink a bit of wine with almost every meal. Gasp! But they don't get drunk, so who cares? I don't think drinking wine with every meal is bad anyway. Except maybe breakfast (haha).
SlettI love the Spanish way of eating, by the way! Great blog.
Thank you for your comment Kaley, and thanks for adding some info on Spanish lunch habits at home. I agree on the wine, it's a lovely habit!
SlettI'm spanish and i don't know anybody thay eats just 1 plate. We usually eat 1st plate(salad, vegetables, legumes, rice or pasta) 2nd plate(fish or meat) and desert(yoghourt, fruit, cake, ice cream). At weekends, we sometimes add some appetizers.
SlettThank you Maria for adding more info to the discussion :) I love the Spanish way of eating!
SlettOh my, we are missing out! That looks incredible!
SvarSlettIt is!!! :)
SlettI think lunch in Spain is similar to lunch in Southern France... we love to take our time and lazily indulge... I think it's a Meditteranean thing :)
SvarSlettI've heard the French are even slower than the Spanish! Just lovely :)
Slettill be honest, i hate the norwegian lunch style :( i love long lunches too and not to have a certain food that you eat every single day. i miss goin out for mexican food or sushi for lunch...or to a thai kitchen. and 30 minutes is way too short for lunch! id rather get home later in the day and have a long lunch break. :) i need to come to spain and enjoy those long lunches yum!
SvarSlettWell, I can understand you misliking it if you're used to something completely different! I grew up with it, was used to it and perfectly happy having this for lunch :) Now I am not so sure anymore!
SlettNam! Den ananasen så god ut =)
SvarSlettDet var den også! Mmmm
SlettArtig innlegg! Elsker spansk mat, spesielt tapas i Madrid.
SlettReally my darling, I think you were right when you said that the Spanish way of life was for me - the naps, the children being out late at night, the long lunches. I'm an absolute pro at long lunches. And I have wine with almost every meal. It's about pairing a lovely meal with a perfect drink. I (and I know others that) put as much effort in buying wine as they would in preparing a meal or ordering a meal.
SvarSlettYes I think you would fit right in here! I would like to know more about wine to be honest, but there are so many good Spanish wines available here that I am no wiser.
SlettThis is hands down the best lunch I have ever seen. And wine too! Talk about making the work day go down easier.
SvarSlettI don't think I'd ever complain about lunch in Spain. So delicious looking!
SvarSlettWow! That's so filling! Looking forward to experience them next week! I love your blog btw :)
SvarSlettThank you, M! Look forward to it, it's woooonderful!
