Girona, El Call & Baños Árabes

Many people know Girona, just because the airport is used as one of the low cost airports to Barcelona. But Girona is so much more than just that. It is a beautiful old town with lots of history, and I think it’s really worth visiting, instead of just jumping straight on the bus or train to Barcelona.

The river parts the old town from the new. The old town and El Call really is worth visiting. El Call, is one of Europe’s best preserved medieval Jewish neighborhoods. Take some time, walk around, admire the old stone buildings (and how they were built in its time...), get lost in the narrow cobbled streets and just enjoy the beautiful surroundings. I know I did!

Go up to the Cathedral (the widest Gothic nave in the world) ...

 ...and then just wander around. I'll take you on a walk so

But Girona also has some interesting museums, like for instance the museum of the old Baños Árabes in Girona. I am very fascinated with the concept of Arab Baths. Since my most amazing first experience at the Hammam in Málaga, I have been a huge fan. I had to enter the museum now didn't I?

It was constructed in 1194, imitating the structure of the Moslem baths at the time. It contained a dressing room, cold room, temperate room, hot room and the room of the boiler.

Again, I was amazed at how such a thing was built back then. It's beautiful!

 

 The entrance fee is just 2 euros, and the museum is located at C/Ferran el Catolic.

Girona (in Catalan, Gerona in Spanish) is located about 90 km. north of Barcelona and
you can get there by air, bus or train.
