Nativity scenes are a big part of Advent and Christmas preparations in Spain. There are several here in Las Palmas, but the most impressive one is definitely the one made of sand on Las Canteras beach. This year is the seventh edition. I was so lucky to see it last year too, and I am looking forward to seeing it this year.
The other day I snapped some photos of the making of it. I love seeing artists working, and this was no exception. It is so impressive to see them create these huge sand sculptures!
Anyway, here's what you can do with 500 tons of sand on a 1500 square meter space!
I can't help thinking back to my golden days as a sand castle maker... Let's just say much has happened in the Sand Castle business since then, hah!
The skill is amazing! What a beautiful way to display a Nativity :)
SvarSlettI couldn't agree more!
SlettIt always amazes me what people can do with sand... and how quickly it disappears again.
SvarSlettOne of the things that amazes me with this one is that it stays for about a month. Yes it breaks a little but still stays very nice for such a long time. I guess we'll need to hope for good weather for December :)
SlettWow, this really is amazing!! I've spent couple of Christmases in Spain when my parents lived there, and I do remember seeing those nativity scenes. But unfortunately they weren't quite like this! :)
SvarSlettYep those nativity scenes are pretty common everywhere in Spain I think! But this is still the most impressive one in my eyes :)
SlettOh wow! This is awesome! I love it and I want to build something like that too!
SvarSlett:)
SlettWHOA!!!! So awesome.
SvarSlettYou know, you COULD take a trip over to Barcelona when I am there :) :) January 25th-28th. Just a suggestion!
I COULD. But I am planning a trip to Bcn just two weeks later... if not I would have considered it!!
Sletthaha, fair enough :) It was worth a try!
SlettWow! I can't even imagine how much practice is needed to perfect that!
SvarSlettYep, it certainly is impressive! I have no idea how the make it, and how they make it last so well over time.
SlettThis is amazing!!! I think in 2014, I will see it in person!! :)
SvarSlettThat would be a cool plan!
SlettWhat a beautiful art form. It must be so relaxing and so rewarding. I can't wait to see this years one all done up.
SvarSlettIt is now open to the public but I haven't been there yet. I will go today or tomorrow!
